Csócsi 500 — Homemade Squeezable Dumpling
Recommended age: 8+. Adult supervision required! The Csócsi 500 is a homemade squeezable dumpling character: its body is a double balloon filled with a cornstarch mixture, the tied balloon top stays visible as part of the design, and it sits in a small woven basket.
Chemicals
- 4 tbsp cornstarch (for the filling) — for the filling
- 2 tbsp water (room temperature) — room temperature
- 1 tbsp vegetable glycerin (sold in pharmacies; keeps the filling soft) — sold in pharmacies; keeps the filling soft
- 1 tsp neutral cooking oil
- tsp cocoa powder or food colouring (optional, a pinch for a warmer tone) — optional, a pinch for a warmer tone

Procedure

The finished figure is NOT edible and must not be given to children under 3 — the balloon is a choking hazard. An adult should always tie the balloon. Use a latex-free balloon in case of latex allergy. Work on a wipeable surface.
Safety! -
Make the filling: in a small bowl mix 4 tbsp cornstarch, 2 tbsp water, 1 tbsp glycerin and 1 tsp oil. Stir until you get a smooth, thick mixture that slowly changes shape under pressure.

Test the mixture: press it slowly with a finger — it gives way. Then tap it fast — it feels hard. If it is too runny add a little cornstarch, if too thick add a few drops of water.
Technique -
Stretch one balloon inside another so you get a double-walled, stronger skin. Use a beige or light brown balloon on the outside.

Spoon the mixture into the double balloon through a funnel. Do not fill it completely: it should stay soft and squeezable.

Gently squeeze out the trapped air so the figure becomes full and even.

An adult ties the balloon neck tightly, leaving the characteristic tuft sticking up — that tied top is the Csócsi 500's signature.

Draw two large friendly eyes and cut a muzzle patch from white card; stick it on the front of the balloon.

Sit the figure in the small basket and leave it for 10 minutes so the filling settles evenly.
How the Csócsi 500 was born
One day Csinszka threw away Ati's squishy dumpling of uncertain origin, meaning to help. The news had been carrying reports that some recalled or counterfeit versions might contain hazardous chemicals. Ati cried a lot about it.
Csinszka sat down beside him, comforted him, and told him she knew exactly how he felt: her own mother, Hajni, had once thrown away her suspicious squishy too. Losing your favourite squeezable figure is a big deal when you love it.
When Ati finally stopped crying, the two of them sat down and decided to solve the problem like engineers. Since both want to be scientist-inventors one day, the plan came together quickly: what people need is a recipe for making a similar cute squeezable figure at home — from simple, everyday materials, in a non-toxic way.
That is how the Csócsi 500, the homemade squeezable dumpling, was born. The name and the character are theirs: the drawing shown here is Ati's, and the whole recipe was built from it.
Editorial note: it is worth being precise — not every squishy toy is toxic. The official warnings and recalls concerned specific counterfeit or poorly labelled products: on 25 June 2026 the UK authority recalled a "Squeezy Dumplings" product because its outer layer contained too much benzene, and the U.S. CPSC issued a warning about fake and counterfeit squishy toys. The Csócsi 500 is not a replacement for those — it is an example of making a toy yourself whose ingredients you know.

- Why does it work?
- The filling is a mixture of cornstarch and water, which does not behave like an everyday liquid: it gives way and flows under slow pressure, but stiffens under a sudden hit. This is called a non-Newtonian fluid. The glycerin keeps it from drying out quickly, and the double balloon provides shape and safety.
- How long does it last?
- Usually from a few days to 1–2 weeks, depending on balloon quality and storage. Keep it away from heat, sunlight and pets. If you notice an unusual smell or mould, throw it away.
- Can it be filled with slime instead?
- You can, but if the goal is that every ingredient is simple and checkable, the cornstarch filling is the better starting point — you know exactly what is in it.
- What makes it really cute?
- Large eyes, a simple smile, a beige balloon and a small woven basket. Do not hide the tied balloon tuft — that is what gives it character.
